Psychotherapy has been derived from Psychodynamic, Psychoanalytical theory of talking therapies… as it can be helpful to talk one to one and aid in mental health.

The Psychodynamic and Psychoanalytical approach to therapy focused more on a person’s past history rather than the present.

With the assistance of a therapist an individual would have been encouraged to talk about a past event or their past history , in the hope that this would help to lift symptoms of  Depression, Neurosis, Anxieties and any disruptions in a person’s mental health, this could be achieved safely. Freudians theory of Psychoanalysis would also at times have used dream analysis in an attempt to reach any unconscious information that may have been causing conflict in the present day.

Free Association Talking.

Also Free Association Talking may have been used where a client would say whatever comes into their minds , no matter how personal or emotional it might be, when the information was brought to consciousness , the therapist would then aid a client to have better understandings of their selves and feelings and feel a relief for being able to talk and make sense of the context in the current reality.

Using Psychotherapy to enable positive change

Psychotherapy is a therapeutic tool that I use in therapy in conjunction with Hypnotherapy and Neuro Linguistic Programming. Psychotherapy is used firstly within a therapy session to gather information and identify any problem areas a person may feel they have related from the past or present. The information gathered is then used by the therapist in a cognitive and helpful way to give positive interventions to each individual. An intervention could be giving a different insight, to a problem or memory, helping to create a different understanding if appropriate…

Another intervention could be the use of A Thought Stopping Process. This is where saying a word to one-self, when a problem memory or unwanted feeling occurs such as a feeling of Stress, Anxiety Panic, Apprehension of a behaviour occurring or Fear of overwhelming Emotion. The Intervention process can help to make changes in patterns of mental thoughts, Cognition and Behaviour to more appropriate ones that can enhance positive change in the present.

Psychotherapy can aid in allowing an individual to have better understanding of the past or the present even if the past or present does not change. This in itself can reduce and change a person’s understanding and incites of their selves and problems, Anxieties, Past Memories and Emotional Attachments, Traumas, which may have been carried into the present day. The psychotherapeutic value of change may be the enabling of an individual to feel and think more positively in the present and have more control, this is Cognitive Psychotherapy.

The integrated approach to therapy which I practise would bring you to an understanding of an enhanced modern approach to Psychotherapy, Hypnotherapy, and Neuro-Linguistic Programming.

The Unconscious as a positive therapeutic tool

Yes we can hold negative past feelings triggers and memories such as Trauma, Panic, Anxiety – but we also hold lots of skills and successes that can be brought forward to consciousness to help us to change in the present day and overcome, past anxieties, emotional trauma, phobias.
